Mauro Ferrari Education Institute Director

Prof. Mauro Ferrari was born in Livorno in 1952. He graduated from Medicine and Surgery at University of Pisa in 1977. He specialized in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Since 1997 he chairs the Unit of Vascular Surgery at the University of Pisa. Since 2004 he is Full Professor of Surgery. He is member of several scientific societies (Italian Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery; European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery; European Society for Cardiovascular Surgery; European Surgical Association). He has been National Secretary of the Section for Mininvasive Vascular Surgery (SAAM). His main interests include the development of techniques and instruments for mini-invasive aortic surgery. He published 2 books and over 380 papers or chapters. He is currently the Director of EndoCAS.

Franco Mosca Surgical Education Institute Director

Prof. Franco Mosca was born in Biella in 1942. He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery at University of Pisa in 1966. He achieved PhD from Medical College at Scuola Superiore S. Anna, Pisa. He specialized in General Surgery, Urology and Emergency Surgery and Critical Care at University of Pisa. From 1986 to 2012 he was Professor of Surgery at University of Pisa. Since 2014 he is Emeritus Professor of Surgery at University of Pisa. His clinical activities included: development of vascular surgery in Pisa, development of interventional ultrasonography, development of surgical endoscopy, organization of Tuscany system of organ donation, development of kidney transplantation program from cadaveric and living donors including minimally invasive procurement, establishment and development of liver and pancreas transplantation program in Tuscany. Since 1997 he is Founding Member of Common Unit for Experimental Surgery, and since 1998 Founder and President of Fondazione Arpa. Since 2007 he is President of Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery in Tuscany Region and President of “Ex Allievi della Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna”, while since 2008 Head of Health Technology Assessment in Tuscany Region. He is author of over 500 peer-reviewed articles and active member of over 15 Scientific Societies, including: Italian Society of Surgery, Italian Society for Organ Transplantation (President), the European Society of Surgery (Treasurer), European Society for Organ Transplantation, American College of Surgeons (Fellow), Italian Chapter of American College of Surgeons, and American Surgical Association (Honorary Member), and Royal College of Scotland in Edinburgh (Fellow).

Andrea Moglia

Dr. Andrea Moglia received a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in microsystems engineering. Since 2009 he has been working at EndoCAS on simulation for laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Since 2011 he has been using simulators for robotic surgery (da Vinci Skills Simulator and dV-Trainer) for validation studies, training courses, and development of curricula, accumulating over 1,000 hours of experience as proctor. He has experience also with simulators for laparoscopy (LapSim). Since 2014 he is member of Technologies and Simulation Committee of American College of Surgeons. He is first author of articles on leading peer-reviewed journals and invited speaker at major international conferences in the field.

Luca Morelli

Prof. Luca Morelli was born in 1974. He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery at University of Pisa and he specialized in General Surgery. He performed about 4000 surgical Interventions of which over 2600 as first operator and over 1500 Interventional Ultrasound procedures. He is currently Associate Professor of Surgery at University of Pisa. He is member of several Scientific Societies (American College of Surgeons, Clinical Robotic Surgery Association, Italian Society of Ultrasound in Biology and Medicine, Italian Society Organ Transplantation). He published 200 papers in scientific publications on several topics such as transplants, surgical oncology, interventional ultrasound, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery.

Vincenzo Ferrari

Dr. Vincenzo Ferrari was born in 1976 in Italy. He received the master degree in computer science engineering from the University of Pisa in 2001. In 2002 he worked at ISTC-CNR (National Research Council) on motion modelling and surface deformation for a 3D talking face. From 2003 to 2005 he worked for a private company on machine vision, voice interactive systems, animatronics and 3D avatars, and he received a master in Energetics. In January 2006 he joined to the EndoCAS Centre as PhD Student. He defended his thesis in February 2009 regarding segmentation, registration and mixed reality. He is the technical/scientific coordinator of EndoCAS. He is Assistant Professor at Department of Computer Science at University of Pisa.

Alda Mazzei

Dr. Alda Mazzei was born in Pisa in 1960. She graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Pisa and specialized in Anaesthesiology. She has excellent experience in the field of cardiac and vascular anesthesia. She was invited by the General Consolate of Italy for cardiac surgery mission at Ramallah Governmental Hospital West Bank. She was involved in International Cooperation in Egypt and Armenia for cardiac surgery and Algeria for general surgery. She is certified instructor and director of BLSD, ACLS, and PALS courses by AHA (American Heart Association). She is certified instructor of CRM (crisis resource management) for patient safety. Currently she is the scientific coordinator of the Medical Simulation Centre of Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana (EndoCAS Education).

Alessandro Campatelli

Dr. Alessandro Campatelli was born in Pisa in 1952. He graduated with honors Medicine and Surgery at University of Pisa in 1979. He specialized in Ultrasound, General Surgery, and Urology. Since 1982, his principal interest moved to diagnostic and interventional ultrasound in general, urologic and transplantation surgery, being one of the two persons in charge of the ultrasound section at the general surgery unit at Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana. Since 1986 he has been teaching ultrasound at university SIUMB (Italian Society of Ultrasound in Biology and Medicine) courses. Since 2012 he is Director of the SD Ecografia Diagnostica ed Interventistica in Chirurgia e nei Trapianti. He is member of several scientific societies (SIUMB, EFSUMB). He published over 45 papers and 20 chapters.

Sir Alfred Cuschieri

Prof. Sir Alfred Cuschieri is currently the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Institute of Medical Science and Technology. He is also professor of surgery at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa and was formerly Professor of Surgery and Head of the Department of Surgery and Molecular Oncology at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, the University of Dundee (1976 -2003). His main research interests include, surgical technology for minimal access surgery (MAS), nanotechnology for healthcare, image display technology and robotics. His research over the years has been funded by Wellcome, EPSRC, SHEFC MRC, EU, MUIR and Industry. He has received many international awards including: the International Society of Surgery 1993 Prize; Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Gold Medal, Knight Bachelor - Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Fellow of the Academy of Science; Fellow of the Royal Society; Queen’s award for higher and continued education; Excel Award of the Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons; the SAGES Lifetime achievement award; the Nissen Prize – German Surgical Association; Gimbernet’s prize of the Catalonian Surgical Society; Life time achievement award of the Indian Association of Endoscopic Surgeons; Hon Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons in 2005, Hon Member American Surgical Association in 2006 and International Steven Hoogendijl prize. He has received several honorary degrees. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Surgical Endoscopy and serves on the Editorial Board of 6 other major peer-review journals. He has served as President/ Secretary/ Council member of 15 surgical national and international societies. He has over 600 original publications in major peer review journals and is the author of 23 books and 57 patents.
